Methodist and Baptist clergy members settled Northeast Johnson County more than 150 years ago, creating missions and schools for the Shawnee natives. The Mission area with its free-flowing springs was a favorite watering hole for pioneers traveling west on the Santa Fe Trail. Many decided to make their homes here. They developed the rich farmland and later surrounded it with businesses to support the farming community. By 1928, there was a drug store, restaurant, hardware and dry goods store, a barbershop, and a cleaning and pressing establishment. The first Mission grocery store was built in 1930, followed by a post office in 1940. Today, people from all over the metropolitan area visit Mission to shop or do business and enjoy the helpful, friendly services offered throughout the area.
As Mission grew, nearby Kansas City emerged as a sophisticated, cosmopolitan neighbor to the east. Northeast Johnson County is a vibrant part of the thriving Kansas City metropolitan area. Kansas City is home to the Chiefs football team and the Royals baseball team. Both teams play at the Truman Sports Complex, known for its unique architectural design. The Wizards and the Blades play at Kemper Arena, which is also home to the annual American Royal Livestock show with parade, rodeo and famous Kansas City barbecue.
Kansas City also offers amusement parks such as Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun. Other area attractions include the Country Club Plaza, the Kansas City International Raceway, the Liberty Memorial Museum, Science City at Union Station, Starlight Theater, the Woodlands Racing and the Toy & Miniature Museum of Kansas City.
